Our team is led by Paul, a former Police Detective with over 22 years of experience in various roles. These include covert policing and intelligence, counterterrorism and counter-extremism, undercover policing, and criminal investigations into serious and complex crimes like domestic violence, stalking, violence and abuse against vulnerable people, and sexual offences.
Paul’s last role in the police was with the Economic Crime Team, where he led and managed investigations into high-level theft and fraud by employees, cybercrime, abuses of power within law firms, and allegations of corruption in local government.
Before founding The Fraud Nerd in 2023, he worked as a Fraud Specialist in Local Government in Liverpool. He led at a senior level and drove the organisation’s focus on fighting financial crime, specifically internal risks. He was the authority’s subject matter expert on internal fraud and fraud risk assessment and oversaw their whistleblowing arrangements and internal investigations.
He transformed the organisation’s approach to fighting fraud and corruption with a framework and strategy described by the central government as “an example of best practice”. Paul also chaired a regional fraud group and was part of national counter-fraud groups.
Paul delivers accredited training, including the Accredited Counter Fraud Specialist (ACFS) and Technician (ACFTech) courses, and coaches counter-fraud professionals undertaking their two-year fraud investigator apprenticeship. He also holds Level 7 qualifications in Intelligence & Security and Fraud & Financial Crime. Paul lives with his wife and their dog, Dexter – who also happens to be his favourite counter-fraud apprentice.
